Poet Library

The focus of this exploration was to create varying degrees of privacy and separation. Three apartments for three poets are the most reclusive(taking up the top three floors of the building) while a writing center, poetry library, and a quiet park are increasingly more active and accessible to the general public. The visitor walks along the path off of the public sidewalk and approaches the entrance underneath the structure. The guest ascends the ramps containing the library stacks. Study carrels and reading rooms are sunken into the floor. Special attention was paid to the cladding of the building in order to bring light into a dark site surrounded by skyscrapers. The folds and bare spaces on the perforated screen accentuate the differentiating slopes of the facade. Extensive sun studies were done to study the effects of different program massings on the light available to the exterior garden surrounding the poetry library.  SPRING 2013
