House for a Writer

This house is designed for author Spike Walker, who writes of his experiences crab fishing on the Bering Sea off of Alaska. The tight dimensions and  narrow, meandering circulatory paths are based on those of actual fishing vessels. The large angle relates to the iconic image of a ship. The entrance is wide and tall, welcoming those who have come to hear one of Walker’s harrowing tales told in the large living room with views of the New River.  The writing room is small in plan but feels vast with windows facing the river.  The bedroom is elevated for privacy but has easy access to the writing room.  Horizontal pieces of wood and corten steel  clad the house, similar to the materials used for ship-making.  Several sun studies were done to ensure that the house has adequate natural light.  SPRING 2013
