Drawing Machine

Working with a team of four other design students, we designed an object that was not only beautiful, but also functional. Its purpose? To draw. Once we decided upon a drawing medium (charcoal), we determined how the charcoal would be dispersed onto the paper. A concoction of powdered charcoal, chalk pastel (for color), and iron shavings sit in PVC pipe cups that are dispensed at the user’s whim. The iron shavings attach themselves to magnets set into gears being spun by the artist. These gears are located beneath the paper under a layer of Plexiglas. The now rotating iron shavings drag the charcoal across the paper in orbital patterns. The disk shapes are interrupted as the user drags the paper out of the contraption, leaving bold markings down the piece.  SPRING 2012
